Types of Online Learning
Whatever the degree sought, there are two fundamental approaches to engaging your education online:
- Independent Study - This approach provides the student with optimal flexibility. As the name suggests, each student has access to online teaching materials, which might include video lectures. In any event, all are accessible to the student at his or here convenience. This is of particular interest to those who work full time or who can only participate after hours. If you were a police officer who worked in the evenings and slept during the day, the wee hours of the morning or very late at night might be the only time to advance your studies. For you, a traditional education is completely out of the question, short of quitting your job. And who among us can afford that option? For you, in this hypothetical situation, independent study would be the next best alternative.
- Teacher Mediated Option -Also known as Instructor Mediated, this approach offers an experience as similar to traditional learning as is available through online education. Classes are offered during the day, during a regular work week. But instead of traveling to a school and a physical classroom, you log onto the Internet, to the school's website, and watch streaming video or audio, and in some cases student/teacher instant messaging. Other resources would still be available on line at the convenience of the student. This method of online learning might be of interest to those who not good at self-discipline. The obligation to log on and "attend" class can really be a great motivator! While most professionals and mature adults have learned self-discipline, many younger students who might otherwise enroll in traditional universities might have trouble with that. For them, this is a great alternative to the expense of a traditional university. Many universities offer this online approach in tandem with a traditional professor's regular in-class presentations. All it takes to monitor a traditional classroom environment is to install a web-streaming camera and they are good to go live on the Net. Shut ins, stay-at-home moms or dads with some daytime freedom might also find this approach gives them a feeling of connection to the outside world.
With online education offering greater educational opportunity, people in greater number are considering furthering their education online. For them, online education is a wise investment of their time and money.
